The Waikato River Trails offer a multi-purpose walking and cycling experience through varied environments where around every corner is a new vista. Towering dams, suspension bridges and long wandering boardwalks make memorable destinations in their own right. We have maps of the trails here at the lodge and can help you with drop offs and picks ups so choose the trail that best suits your level of fitness and sense of adventure and go for it! A shuttle service supporting the following cycle trails, Waikato River Trails, the Pureora Timber Trail and the Hauraki Rail Trail. Blue Tui Shuttles offers a comfortable 10 seater van and a professionally built cycle trailer that can carry up to 12 bikes – 26” and 29” tyres. Why not base your self at Lake Maraetai Lodge and use Blue Tui Shuttle to shuttle you around, it is not just for cyclists, trampers can use the service a well!
The best place to go to in Mangakino for great coffee, hot chocolate and pizza (just a few things they offer) is the Bus Stop Cafe! A unique converted 1972 Bedford bus situated right on the lake front is something you do not find everywhere in New Zealand. With a vast reputation being featured in TV shows, North and South magazine, Lonely Planet and included in the AA’s list of “101 Great Days Out in NZ”, how can you not pop down to the Bus Stop Cafe for lunch???

If you own a motocross bike and are looking for a place to ‘rip it up’, try the Mangakino Moto-X Park. The park is a big hit with locals and out-of-town rider, particulary for its all -weather appeal. More information here.
The motocross park is on a portion of the Whakamaru Domain, where free camping and lake access is available.
Grab some clubs and get golfing on this flat, undulating, easy 9 hole walking course with picturesque views of Lake Maraetai and the surrounding forests. Although classed as a 9 hole course, there is a separate 9th and 18th green with the other greens played twice to make up the 18 holes.
New members and green fee players at Mangakino Golf Course are always welcome.
Lake District Adventures offer you the options to walk, ride or paddle the trails. They are based at the southern end of Lake Karapiro and offer tours and shuttle services as well as equipment hire for the lakes and trails of the Waikato and Bay of Plenty.

The Timber Trail is nestled in Pureora Forest, between Lake Taupo and Te Kuiti, in the Central North Island. Begin your journey at Pureora Village in the north, ending at Ongarue in the south.
